Music for the steelpan, the instrument Trinidadians built from discarded oil drums in the 1930s and 40s and the only acoustic instrument invented in the twentieth century. Rival neighbourhood bands of a hundred players or more meet each Carnival at Panorama, the competition that drives the arrangements. Desperadoes, Renegades and Phase II Pan Groove are among the sides that have defined it.
