Shaabi is the raw, working-class street music of Egypt's urban neighborhoods, emerging in the 1970s. Blunt, witty, and often satirical, it set everyday struggles and celebrations to insistent rhythms and reedy vocals. Ahmed Adaweya pioneered the sound, and it remained the soundtrack of weddings and street cafes for decades.
