Über Ahmed Adaweya

Ahmed Adaweya is the pioneer of shaabi, the raw working-class music that gave voice to Egypt's urban poor in the 1970s. His gritty vocals and cassette-driven hits broke sharply from the polished tarab of the golden age. Songs like Zahma became anthems of everyday Cairo life, praised by some and dismissed by cultural elites. He laid the foundation for every street-music movement that followed.
