Russian dance-pop took shape in the 1990s as private labels, FM radio and music television replaced the Soviet broadcast system. Acts such as Ruki Vverh! turned simple synth hooks into mass singalongs, and t.A.T.u. carried Russian pop into international charts in the early 2000s. Dima Bilan's 2008 Eurovision win, Nyusha's chart run and the viral rave-pop of Little Big kept the genre visible well beyond Russian-speaking audiences.
