Über Persian Classical

The radif tradition, a repertoire of melodic models grouped into twelve dastgah that a musician learns by heart and then improvises from. Voice sits at its centre, setting classical Persian poetry by Hafez, Rumi and Saadi, with tar, setar, santur, ney and kamancheh around it. Mohammad Reza Shajarian was its defining voice for half a century, and Hossein Alizadeh and Kayhan Kalhor brought it into composition and international collaboration.
