Palm-Wine and Maringa
Über Palm-Wine and Maringa
Palm-wine music is the guitar-led social song of West Africa's coastal towns, and maringa is the Freetown dance music that grew alongside it in the Krio community. Ebenezer Calendar and his Maringar Band recorded songs about Freetown life from the 1950s and shaped much of what followed. S. E. Rogie made palm-wine guitar internationally known, with My Lovely Elizabeth becoming a classic of the form and his late Real World recordings reaching a new generation.
