Norway's traditional and roots music, spanning two distinct strands. The Sámi joik, the indigenous song-form of the Arctic north, was carried into the modern era by Mari Boine, who fused it with jazz and rock while reclaiming a tradition the Norwegian state had suppressed for a century. The Norse folk revival, led by Wardruna's Einar Selvik, reconstructs Viking-age instruments and Old Norse runic poetry into ritual music heard by millions through the History Channel series Vikings.
