Ethiopian Pop
Über Ethiopian Pop
Modern Ethiopian pop carried the country's music out of the golden age and across the diaspora from the 1980s onward. Synthesizers and drum machines updated the modal ballads and dance rhythms, while soulful voices like Aster Aweke and Gigi found international audiences. Teddy Afro turned reggae-tinged pop into stadium-sized anthems of love and national feeling, making him the biggest Ethiopian star of the modern era.
