Ejigayehu Shibabaw, known as Gigi, is an Ethiopian singer who brought Amharic song to the world stage through collaborations with jazz and world-music figures. Her self-titled album, produced by Bill Laswell with players like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, married Ethiopian devotional and secular traditions to modern production. Her clear, soaring voice made her one of the most internationally visible Ethiopian artists of her generation.
