Soviet Estrada
Über Soviet Estrada
Estrada is the Soviet term for stage and broadcast popular song: polished numbers performed on television, in concert halls and at state song festivals. It drew on composers and lyricists from across the Soviet republics, which is how a melody by the Latvian composer Raimonds Pauls became a Russian standard. Alla Pugacheva was its biggest star from the late 1970s, bringing a looser, more personal style of performance into the official pop system.
