Formed in Tokyo in 1978 by Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Yukihiro Takahashi, Yellow Magic Orchestra invented synthpop. Their 1979 records Solid State Survivor and X∞Multiplies sold millions worldwide and laid the foundation for every electronic dance music genre that followed. Sakamoto and Takahashi both died in 2023, but Hosono continues to record and tour, and YMO's influence on Daft Punk, Kraftwerk, and the entire global electronic underground is impossible to overstate.
