Über Utada Hikaru
Utada Hikaru's 1999 debut album First Love sold 7.65 million copies, more than any other album in Japanese history. The American-raised, bilingual songwriter brought R&B-trained vocals to Japanese pop and effectively kicked off the genre's modern era. The Kingdom Hearts theme Hikari (2002) made her a globally recognised voice, and the 2022 album Bad Mode showed she could still rewrite the j-pop playbook twenty-five years in.
