Pātea Māori Club

Über Pātea Māori Club

The Pātea Māori Club created one of the most culturally important songs in New Zealand history. Led by the visionary Dalvanius Prime, the community group from the small Taranaki town of Pātea recorded Poi E in 1984, a te-reo-Māori song that fused traditional poi rhythms with electro and hip-hop and spent weeks at number one. It became a landmark of Māori-language pop and found a whole new generation through Taika Waititi's film Boy.
