Pankrti were the first proper punk band in socialist Yugoslavia. Formed at Ljubljana's Šentpeterski high school in 1977 by Pero Lovšin and friends, they played their debut concert in October 1977, six months ahead of any other Yugoslav punk band, and released the first Yugoslav punk single in 1978. Their lyrics named names: Slovenian bureaucrats, fake Catholic piety, Ljubljana's provincial small-mindedness. Without them there is no Yugoslav new wave, and no path from punk to the Neue Slowenische Kunst scene that followed.
