Nirvana took punk-inspired rock from the Seattle underground to global dominance with Nevermind in 1991. Kurt Cobain's songwriting and raw voice made Smells Like Teen Spirit the anthem of a generation and ended the reign of hair metal. Cobain's death in 1994 closed the band's short, era-defining run.
