Kamancheh player and the Iranian musician best known internationally, through the Silk Road Ensemble and long partnerships with Yo-Yo Ma, Shujaat Husain Khan and the Brooklyn Rider quartet. Silent City, written after visiting a Kurdish town destroyed in the Iran-Iraq war, is his most performed composition. He has been nominated for Grammys repeatedly and has spent much of his career outside Iran. His playing is the reference point for the instrument.
