Joe Arroyo

1955–2011

Über Joe Arroyo

One of Colombia's greatest salsa and tropical singers, born in Cartagena. After starting with Fruko y sus Tesos, he formed La Verdad and created a personal fusion of salsa, cumbia, and Caribbean rhythms he called joesón. His 1988 song 'La Rebelión', about enslaved Africans in colonial Cartagena, became an anthem across Latin America. Revered for his voice and stagecraft, he was mourned nationally when he died in 2011.
