Héctor Lavoe was the voice of Fania-era salsa, a singer from Ponce whose clear, aching tenor and impeccable timing made him the most beloved sonero of the 1970s. His partnership with trombonist Willie Colón produced a run of classic albums, and his solo anthem El Cantante became salsa's defining statement. His turbulent life and early death only deepened his legend across the Puerto Rican and Latino world.
