He Yong was the punk wing of the Magic Rock Three Heroes, the trio of solo signings to the Taiwanese label Rock Records' Beijing imprint Magic Stone in the early 1990s. His 1994 debut 垃圾場 set fast electric guitars against lyrics about street life, censored politics, and the noise of a city rebuilding itself. The 1994 Hong Kong Coliseum concert with Dou Wei and Zhang Chu became the foundational live performance of mainland rock. A mental-health crisis curtailed his career in 1996, but he has reappeared periodically and the original recordings keep finding new audiences.
