Über Dou Wei

Dou Wei fronted the prog-leaning Black Panther in the late 1980s before going solo in 1994 with 黑夢, a record whose icy synths and post-punk dread sounded a decade ahead of mainland rock. He spent the 2000s moving deeper into ambient and improvised music with the project 不一定, releasing instrumental work that almost no commercial label would have touched. His brief marriage to Faye Wong and rumoured eccentricity made him as much a 1990s tabloid fixture as a musical one, but the work outlives the gossip.
