Domenico Modugno
1928–1994
Über Domenico Modugno
Domenico Modugno changed Italian popular music overnight with Nel blu dipinto di blu, known the world over as Volare. Winning Sanremo in 1958, it became a global smash, topped the American charts, and won the first ever Grammy for Record of the Year. A singer, actor, and later a politician, Modugno broke from the stiff crooning of his day with open-armed, emotional performances that made him the father of the modern Italian song.
