Sam Fan Thomas built makassi, a lighter and faster offshoot of makossa, and took it well beyond Cameroon. African Typic Collection, released in 1984, became a continental hit and one of the most licensed African records of the decade. The track's medley structure and singalong chorus made it a fixture at weddings and parties across West and Central Africa. He had worked as a guitarist for years before stepping out as a bandleader.
