Ray Charles fused gospel fervour with rhythm and blues and, in doing so, invented soul music. Blind from the age of seven, he mastered piano, saxophone, and arranging, then crossed into country with Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music in 1962. Frank Sinatra called him the only true genius in the business.
