Nina Simone was a classically trained pianist who became the fiercest voice of the civil rights era. Her repertoire ran from Broadway and jazz standards to the protest songs Mississippi Goddam and Four Women, all delivered with an unmistakable contralto. She spent her later years in Europe and is now revered as one of the great American singers.
