Leonard Cohen was a Montreal poet and novelist who turned to songwriting in his thirties and never stopped working. His low-voiced ballads, Hebrew-inflected imagery, and patient craft made Hallelujah, Suzanne, and So Long, Marianne canonical. He released his final album You Want It Darker weeks before his death in November 2016 and died as a Canadian secular saint.
