Laila Mourad was one of the defining female voices of Egypt's golden age, ranked alongside Umm Kulthum as a singer and surpassing her as a film star. She headlined dozens of musical films through the 1940s and 1950s, becoming one of the most beloved entertainers in the Arab world at the height of her fame. Her light, warm voice and screen presence made her a household name across the region for decades. She largely retired from performing by the 1960s but remains a defining figure of Egyptian cinema and song.
