Wellington's seven-piece dub-soul-jazz collective formed in 1999 around producer Fitchie and singer Joe Dukie. The 2005 debut Based on a True Story became the first New Zealand album to be released without major-label backing and still top the local charts, helped along by the slow-burn hit Wandering Eye. Fat Freddy's Drop fill European theatres into the 2020s and remain the country's most successful jam-band export.
