Cornelis Vreeswijk

1937–1987

About Cornelis Vreeswijk

Cornelis Vreeswijk was a Dutch-born singer, poet, and troubadour who became one of Sweden's sharpest songwriters. Arriving as a child, he absorbed the Swedish visa tradition and bent it toward social commentary, blues, and biting wit. Songs such as Somliga gar med trasiga skor and Brev fran kolonien paired tender melodies with an outsider's eye on poverty, class, and hypocrisy. Once at odds with the establishment, he is now regarded as a national treasure and a direct heir to Evert Taube.
