About Chacalón

Chacalón, born Lorenzo Palacios, was the king of chicha and the voice of Lima's Andean migrant working class. Fronting La Nueva Crema, he turned the hardships of provincial newcomers into rousing anthems, none bigger than Soy Provinciano. His concerts drew enormous crowds who saw their own struggles in his songs, and his 1994 funeral brought tens of thousands into the streets, cementing his status as a people's idol.
