Banda El Recodo de Cruz Lizárraga, founded in 1938 in El Recodo, Sinaloa, is the oldest continuously active banda ensemble in Mexico and known as la madre de todas las bandas, the mother of all bandas. Originally a regional dance ensemble, the group expanded under Don Cruz and his sons into a 17-piece touring band that recorded with Vicente Fernández, Juan Gabriel, and José Alfredo Jiménez. Albums in the 2000s and 2010s like Codiciado and Hay Amor brought the banda sound to a younger urban audience and pushed it onto pop radio. The group has won three Latin Grammys and continues to tour internationally.
