Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, turned Otis Redding's Respect into a feminist and civil rights anthem in 1967. Raised in her father's Detroit church, she brought gospel power to Atlantic Records and scored 20 number-one R&B hits. She was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
