Indépendance Cha Cha
Grand KalléFather of modern Congolese music who composed 'Indépendance Cha Cha,' the anthem that became the soundtrack of African independence movements across the continent.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the fountainhead of modern African pop. From the 1940s Congolese rumba that fused Cuban son with local rhythms, through the soukous explosion that swept the continent, to the ndombolo dance craze of the 2000s, Kinshasa has been Africa's musical capital for eight decades. Today a new generation carries that legacy into the streaming age while tradi-moderne collectives keep ancestral sounds alive.
