Karl Hyde and Rick Smith's duo had a previous synth-pop life in the 1980s before reinventing themselves as Underworld in 1991 and producing some of the era's most emotional electronic music. Born Slippy .NUXX, used in the closing scene of Trainspotting (1996), became one of the decade's defining tracks. Their live shows are widely cited as among the best electronic-music performances.
