Stan Walker, of Ngāi Te Rangi, Tūhoe, and Ngāti Porou descent, won Australian Idol at nineteen in 2009 and built a parallel career in Australian and New Zealand pop. He survived stomach cancer in 2017 and used the recovery to refocus the work on Māori-language pop and gospel-influenced ballads. The 2023 single I AM, from the Maori film Muru, became a major te reo crossover hit.
