Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe was the king of Igbo highlife, a singer and bandleader whose smooth, philosophical songs became the soundtrack of eastern Nigeria. His 1984 hit Osondi Owendi is one of the best-selling and most beloved highlife records ever made. His relaxed grooves and proverb-laden lyrics kept highlife alive long after the dance-band era faded.
