The surviving members of Joy Division regrouped in 1980, recruited Gillian Gilbert on keyboards, and over the next decade synthesised post-punk with the electronic dance music coming out of Chicago and Detroit. Blue Monday (1983) became the best-selling 12-inch single in UK history. New Order's hybrid of guitar-rock songwriting and club production permanently shaped indie-electronic crossover.
