Born in Shenyang to a family of Manchu ancestry, Na Ying came up in the 1980s mainland pop circuit before her 1998 hit 征服 made her the most recognisable diva of post-reform Mandopop. Her duet with Faye Wong at the 1998 CCTV New Year Gala 相約一九九八 marked the moment the mainland industry caught up with Hong Kong stardom. She remains a fixture on national television as a coach on The Voice of China and other prime-time vocal competitions.
