Mohammed Abdel Wahab was a towering composer and singer who modernised Arabic music across the 20th century. He introduced Western instruments and harmonies to the classical tarab tradition while composing for the greatest voices of his era, including Umm Kulthum and Abdel Halim Hafez. He also composed several Arab national anthems. His innovations shaped the entire sound of modern Egyptian music.
