Moana Maniapoto founded Moana and the Moahunters in 1990 and turned a generation of New Zealanders on to the idea that pop in te reo Māori could be modern, electronic, and globally exportable. Her 1991 hit AEIOU and the 1992 album Tahi opened the door for every Māori-language pop project that followed. She continued the project under the name Moana and the Tribe and has presented Māori Television's Te Ao with Moana since 2019.
