Manchester four-piece active from 1976 to 1980, ended by Ian Curtis's suicide at age 23. Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980), both produced by Martin Hannett, set the post-punk template: cold, dub-influenced production, abstract lyrics, and a tension between dance rhythm and emotional collapse. After Curtis's death the surviving members reformed as New Order.
