Jose Afonso is the most politically significant musician in Portuguese history. His song 'Grandola, Vila Morena' was broadcast on radio as the signal that launched the Carnation Revolution on 25 April 1974, ending nearly fifty years of dictatorship. His music fused folk melodies with revolutionary poetry.
