Inul Daratista exploded onto Indonesian television in 2003 with her goyang ngebor drilling dance and a string of dangdut covers that turned her into the most-watched and most-debated performer in the country. Conservative clerics including Rhoma Irama denounced her, but she became a self-made empire of karaoke venues and television shows and proved that the dangdut audience was bigger than the gatekeepers wanted to admit. She continues to release records and tour.
