Born in Beijing, raised on Teresa Teng cassettes, and reborn in Hong Kong as a Cantopop diva, Faye Wong is the bridge between mainland and HK Chinese pop. Her late-90s collaborations with Cocteau Twins and her appearance in Wong Kar-wai's Chungking Express turned her into the rare Chinese singer with an art-house international fanbase. She has been semi-retired since the mid-2000s but every comeback single, including the 2021 ballad 如願, becomes a national event.
