Timba is the high-octane Cuban dance music that emerged in Havana in the late 1980s and exploded in the 1990s. Faster, denser, and more aggressive than classic salsa, it stacks funk, jazz, and rumba on top of son, with virtuosic brass arrangements and breakdowns built to ignite the dance floor. Los Van Van's evolution and NG La Banda's arrival defined the sound.
