Mor Lam
Über Mor Lam
The folk-song tradition of Isan, the Lao-speaking northeast of Thailand, performed by a mor lam, a master singer who improvises rapid-fire poetry over the khaen mouth-organ. The form moved from village festivals onto records in the 1960s and into the discotheques of Bangkok in the 1990s with mor lam sing, a rock-and-disco hybrid. Today it sits next to luk thung at the heart of working-class Thai pop, with Chalermphol Malakham and Ying Lee Srijumpol carrying the lineage.
