Merengue Típico
Über Merengue Típico
Merengue típico, affectionately called perico ripiao, is the older rural strain of merengue from the Cibao valley, driven by button accordion, tambora, güira, and marimba bass. Faster and rawer than the orchestrated big-band version, it stayed a living country music rather than a museum piece. Tatico Henríquez modernized it in the 1960s and 1970s, and accordionists like Fefita La Grande and El Prodigio keep it fiercely alive today.
