Keroncong
Über Keroncong
Indonesia's oldest popular song form, keroncong grew out of Portuguese sailor music that took root in the Tugu kampung of Jakarta in the 16th century. Plucked ukulele-like instruments give the genre its name, while flute and cello provide a gentle melodic frame for tender, often nostalgic Indonesian lyrics. Gesang's Bengawan Solo turned keroncong into a soft-power export across Asia after the war.
