Dangdut
Über Dangdut
Indonesia's most popular and most argued-about genre, dangdut fuses Hindustani film music, Malay orkes melayu, and Arabic vocal ornament into a driving 4/4 dance music built around the tabla-like gendang. Rhoma Irama codified it in the 1970s as a vehicle for moral and political messaging, while later stars like Inul Daratista turned it into a controversial stadium-filling pop format.
