One of the leading female voices in modern mbalax, Viviane Chidid started as a backing vocalist in Youssou N'Dour's Super Étoile in the 1990s before launching her solo career and her own band Le Jolof. She has spent the 2000s and 2010s widening mbalax's vocal language toward R&B and hip-hop while keeping the sabar at its centre, and is one of the most visible women in a genre still dominated by male bandleaders.
