Known as the Sultan of Persian Pop, and the artist usually credited with starting it. Mahtab, recorded in 1954, is widely described as the first Persian popular song built around a guitar rather than a classical ensemble, and it made him a star. He was Iranian-Armenian, recorded for decades, and left for the United States after the revolution. Almost every Persian pop singer who followed works in a form he opened.
